Liverpool target Jesper Lindstrom has revealed that he decided to move to Serie A club Napoli for regular playing time
Jesper Lindstrom has admitted that Liverpool expressed interest in signing him during the summer transfer window. However, he ultimately opted to join Napoli, believing it to be a more intelligent decision.
Lindstrom’s football journey began at Brondby, but he gained recognition while playing for Eintracht Frankfurt, contributing to their Europa League victory in 2022. The Danish player had a successful season last year, scoring nine goals across various competitions. He eventually made the move to Napoli for approximately €5 million with €20m compulsory buy clause.
The young attacker envisions himself playing as a right winger or as a ‘number 10’. However, Liverpool already boasts a lineup that includes Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, and Diogo Jota. Even Dominik Szoboszlai, primarily an attacking midfielder, has been deployed in a deeper role since his arrival.
Opting for Napoli, Lindstrom not only secures the chance to participate in the Champions League this season, but he also expects more consistent playing opportunities there. As quoted by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the Danish star said:
Lindstrom began the season with Eintracht Frankfurt but recently made his debut for Napoli as a substitute in a 2-1 Serie A loss to Lazio. Liverpool, despite missing out on the former Bundesliga ace, have undertaken an important midfield overhaul this summer.
The Reds have invested heavily in bringing in new players like Gravenberch, Dominic Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, and Wataru Endo. Simultaneously, they’ve seen the departures of key figures like Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, and James Milner from Anfield during the summer.
“Liverpool wanted me, I am a Liverpool fan so it would’ve been a madly fascinating experience… but would it have been an intelligent move?”. “I am at an age now where I have to play football.”
Lindstrom aims to establish himself as a crucial figure at Napoli in the upcoming months. If he succeeds in making a strong impression at his new club, it could open doors for him to join a top Premier League club in the future.
Liverpool could have greatly benefited from a talented young creative midfielder like Lindstrom, who has room for improvement with the right coaching and experience.
