Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson expresses frustration with the lack of freedom to criticize bad decisions

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson shared his frustration with ESPN (h/t Liverpool Echo) for players’ prohibition to criticize unjust decisions.

The Reds lost 1-2 in the Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The game featured a series of dubious decisions against Liverpool, including two red cards and a penalty incident.

A rushed VAR decision declared Luis Diaz‘s goal offside, despite the player being visibly onside. PGMOL admitted the mistake in a statement but it was already too late as the Reds dropped three crucial points.

Alisson spoke to ESPN (h/t Liverpool Echo) about the sanction players face in rightfully asking for clarifications for the wrong decisions. He said:

“My position is clear, everyone saw it. I don’t like talking about arbitration, nor can we talk about arbitration. Sometimes it feels like we are prisoners. When he opens his mouth, he is punished from all sides. We are human beings and we have to be outraged by this kind of thing. Yes, it’s the fan’s feeling. Our feeling too.”

The 30-year-old questioned the rejection of the technology used in the World Cup. He added:

“I’ve always said that VAR is good, precisely for these unfair situations. Incredibly, these things continue to happen with something so simple, with something that is so objective. And the technology is there. Why don’t you use the technology that FIFA used in the World Cup?”

The Brazilian international has been an indispensable figure between the Liverpool goalpost. Alisson is already a legend in the eyes of many Kopites as he is playing his sixth season at the club.

The 30-year-old made eight saves against Spurs to keep Liverpool in the game including the incredible back-to-back saves against James Maddison and Son Heung-Min. The unfortunate last-second own-goal from visibly tired Joel Matip undone all the hard work. Alisson was the first to approach and console the defender, showing his leadership and also the unity within the squad.

The Brazilian raised a very valid point as the Premier League needs an automated system to judge offsides. The goal-line technology has been an incredible help that benefited everyone and offside decisions require the same solution. Furthermore, every profession comes with accountability and a need for constructive criticism. Censoring players and club officials to protect referees does more damage to their reputations than any good.
