Liverpool target Max Eberl ‘honoured’ by interest from Reds but ‘clear priority’ to join Bayern Munich
Liverpool FC’s hopes of appointing Max Eberl as sporting director have been dealt a blow after the German revealed his “clear priority” is to join Bayern Munich instead.
The Reds hold an interest in recruiting Eberl to fill the void left by Julian Ward’s resignation earlier this season. But according to Bild (h/t Liverpool.com) in Germany, the former Borussia Monchengladbach chief currently favours a switch to Bundesliga rivals Bayern.
Eberl is said to be “honoured” by Liverpool’s pursuit but views a return to Germany as his preferred outcome. The 50-year-old has an emotional connection with Bayern having played for the club and supports a move to Munich over Merseyside.
However, Eberl’s arrival at the Allianz Arena is on hold due to disagreements among Bayern’s hierarchy. Surely, this gives us time to change his mind if we are truly serious about landing him.
Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen is thought to favour current sporting director Christoph Freund to have more influence. Until Bayern’s board reaches a consensus, Eberl’s future remains in limbo.
For Liverpool, missing out on the highly-regarded operator would be a significant blow for the current CEO Billy Hogan. He may be forced to explore alternative options should Bayern finalise a deal to make Eberl their new sporting director.
Eberl built an excellent reputation over nearly two decades with Monchengladbach, attracting Liverpool’s interest. Whether it will lead to a successful partnership in the future remains to be seen.

But prising him away from Germany was always likely to prove difficult, with Bayern boasting the allure to convince Eberl his future lies in the Bundesliga. Hogan must now assess contingency plans to ensure Liverpool’s recruitment team remains in safe hands going forward.
