Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp feels “six times happier” compared to last season when his side lost to Brentford

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp shared his contentment about the improvement his team has made in a short time after the struggle during the last season. Klopp reminiscent the struggles he faced last season when Liverpool lost their first game of 2023 to Brentford.

Liverpool is gearing up to encounter Newcastle United in their initial Premier League clash of 2024. They are currently sitting at the top of the Premier League table with few points separating the top four teams.

The close competition leaves no room for complacency but the steep return to the top pleases the Kopites. Klopp has shown his ability to reform the team and challenge for the top despite the high-spending rival clubs.

Speaking to the media (h/t Liverpool FC’s official site), Klopp shared his happiness over the improvement made by his club. He said:

“[I am] six times happier! I can’t even remember [the first game of 2023], who did we play? Brentford, oh we lost that, so we were sixth for a few minutes and then probably seventh or eighth after that game! Yeah, horrible time last year. It feels better, no doubt about that. How I said, I like a lot of things that we did, but it is not like we really think too much about it. When I say I am not happy, I am OK. I’m not sure that sounds positive enough, but it’s really positive. It’s just so early, that’s all.”

Last season, Liverpool struggled with performance and consistency as most of the long-serving players regressed past their peak. Klopp used the summer transfer window to revamp his squad by completely changing the midfield department.

The 56-year-old had already bought Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez during the last season to refresh the attacking department. Furthermore, Klopp appointed Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold as the captain and the vice-captain respectively.

The shrewd transfer business worked like a charm as every signing has contributed to the success of Liverpool this season. The Reds have successfully progressed to the Europa League last 16 and the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

Klopp’s Liverpool 2.0 is still far from becoming a complete article as they have been wasteful in front of goals. Furthermore, the Reds need to fortify their defence as Joel Matip is currently out for the whole season. Matip is playing in the last season of his current contract the new contract seems highly unlikely.

Liverpool’s defensive duo Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate are fantastic players but their injury record makes them unreliable. Meanwhile, Trent is gradually transitioning into a central midfielder, leaving a gaping hole at the right back. Klopp needs to address the defensive issue even though Liverpool have the best defensive record among the Premier League team.
