According to a report by Gianluca Di Marzio (h/t Daily Express), Liverpool are interested in a move for Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. His £120,000-a-week contract runs until next summer and the report claims that talks of a new contract have reached an impasse.
Courtois has been one of the most consistent and reliable goalkeepers in the Premier League for a long time now. In fact, he played a key role in Chelsea’s title-winning campaign in the 2016/17 season and he also picked up the prestigious Golden Boot award for his contributions.
In the recently concluded season, the Blues might have failed to impress much but Courtois pretty much remained rock-solid between the sticks. In 35 top-flight appearances, the Belgian keeper managed to maintain a total of 15 clean sheets, which is quite impressive. It goes without saying that he would be an upgrade when compared to our current goalkeeping options.
The report also claims that Chelsea would prefer selling Courtois this summer instead of losing him for free next year and that does provide Liverpool with a window of opportunity.
The 26-year-old is not only blessed with lightning-fast reflexes and brilliant instincts but he also boasts of ample Premier League experience.
After the recent Champions League fiasco, Jurgen Klopp must prioritise the signing of a new keeper and on that front, Courtois undoubtedly seems like a good choice. That said, Chelsea will demand a high fee and it remains to be seen if we can afford to pay up.
