Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp considers the Carabao Cup victory as his “most special trophy” in his last 20 years
Jurgen Klopp called the Carabao Cup win with Liverpool the “most special trophy” that he has ever won. The Reds beat Chelsea 1-0 in the extra time of the Carabao Cup final to secure their first trophy.
Liverpool faced a daunting task against the billion-dollar Chelsea squad as their senior team suffered a massive injury crisis. The Reds ended the game with nine academy players who justified the faith shown by their manager with incredible performances.
Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota, Curtis Jones, Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joel Matip are the long-term absentees. Furthermore, Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai failed to make it to the matchday squad as they recovered.
Harvey Elliott, Conor Bradley and Caoimhin Kelleher are the academy players who started the final against Chelsea. The trio have established themselves as an important part of the senior squad at the club.
Liverpool lost Ryan Gravenberch to injury in the first half after a malicious challenge from Moises Caicedo. As the game progressed and plenty of uncontrollable situations played against the Reds, Klopp opted for more youngsters.
He deployed Bobby Clark, James McConnell, Jayden Danns and Jarell Quansah alongside Joe Gomez and Kostas Tsimikas. The Academy youngsters dominated in the 30 minutes of extra-time against the experienced and costly Chelsea side to achieve the victory.
Speaking to Sky Sports (h/t BBC) after the game, Klopp highlighted the significance of the title victory with the youngsters. He said:
“In my 20 years, this is easily the most special trophy. I couldn’t care less about my legacy. I was not here to create one. This was so special. What happened here was absolutely insane, these things are not possible. The team, a squad, an academy full of character. I am so proud I could be part of that tonight. The craziest thing is, we deserved it. We had lucky moments, they had lucky moments. The boys showed up, it was really cool.”

Despite facing the odds and another poor display from referee Chris Kavanaugh, Liverpool’s youngsters showed incredible mentality and prevailed. The travelling Liverpool fanbase at the Wembley Stadium deserves a special mention for building an incredible environment for the team.
