Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim is ready to replace Klopp at Liverpool believes Joao Carlos Teixeira
Ruben Amorim, the current manager of Sporting CP, is now the favorite to succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool ‘s new manager this summer. Amorim’s name has been on the list for some time. But it appears that initially, the Reds have picked ex-midfielder Xabi Alonso as their top target.
Alonso will now stay at Bayer Leverkusen, with Amorim and Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi emerging as leading alternatives. Sporting currently sits at the top of the Portuguese Primeira Liga table, one point ahead of Benfica with a game in hand.
Amorim, 39, ended the club’s 19-year wait for a title in 2021. He has received the backing (h/t Record) of former Liverpool player and countryman Carlos Teixeira.
Teixiera joined the Reds from the Sporting Lisbon academy in an £830k deal in January 2012. He made seven appearances under Klopp in the 2015/16 season before returning to Portugal at the end of his contract.
Now playing for Shanghai Shenhua in China, the Portuguese can’t help but keep track of both of his former clubs’ progress. While he acknowledges that Amorim’s style differs from Klopp’s, Teixeira is confident that his compatriot is prepared for a move to the Premier League but warns that he will need time to adjust. He said:
“Tactically they’re both different, They play differently, with Klopp in a four-man defence and Ruben in a three-man defense. Ruben has proved his worth and has done well in recent years, even though he’s young.”
“You can adapt well (in England) because it is a country where football works very well. In England everything is super organized and there is no confusion. Everything is prepared in advance so that it goes well.”
“But it is a difficult league for a coach to adapt to. You have to adapt to life, training and schedules. It’s above all adapting to the game and the new reality, very different from what happens not only in Portugal, but in other countries.”
Amorim and De Zerbi are now the top two candidates for the job, and each has advantages and disadvantages. There is no doubt that Amorim has done an excellent job at Sporting. His team is on track for another league championship.
His reputation is growing, and there’s a reason why Chelsea has previously expressed interest in him. Nonetheless, he has never managed outside of Portugal, and the Premier League is a significant step up.
