Martin Zubimendi: Liverpool FC’s latest potential recruit? How does he fit our plans?

Liverpool might have answered their demands for a #6. 30-year-old Japanese international Wataru Endo saw himself roped into the squad last summer, and he was our only natural defensive midfield option throughout last season. Fabinho’s departure to Al Ittihad, Tyler Morton’s loan spell at Hull City and Stefan Bajcetic’s long-term injury meant that the Reds at times played Alexis Mac Allister in that role, and it is safe to say that that surely did not go to plan. Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad might help solve the CDM issue at Liverpool.

We all can sing praises for Endo and praise his commitment, but the player himself has hinted at the fact that the Reds might be wise to dive into the market and look at options younger than himself. Make no mistake, Endo is a top player and has been more than mighty useful for the Reds, but he’s surely not our long-term solution to that issue.

Enter Zubimendi. The 25-year-old Spanish international has been a revelation for his club side and played a crucial role in the semi-finals and finals of the recently concluded Euro 2024 to hand Spain their fourth continental title and first since 2012. Let’s travel back in time a bit. During his time at Sociedad’s B side, he was coached by one Xabi Alonso. Not that this name might ring a bell, but this player made a few appearances for Liverpool in the 2000s. Zubimendi has a lot of Alonso in the way that he plays, to add to that.

Sociedad to Liverpool soon?

In a file interview with The Guardian two years ago, Alonso spoke very highly of Zubimendi and called him a coach’s delight, something Arne Slot would love about the midfielder. According to Marca, he saw himself on the transfer radar of Barcelona as a long-term replacement for Sergio Busquets, the best defensive midfielder of his generation. That also speaks highly of Zubimendi’s ability to control the tempo of the game and ability to carry the ball.

It’s good to know that the Reds are seriously considering a move for the player. TKT covered this not a long time ago. With that in mind, let’s do a proper SWOT analysis of the player to assess and understand how he fits the Reds’ style of play. The Merseysiders should seriously consider this opportunity to add a player of Zubimendi’s calibre to their ranks, paving the way for a prosperous future.

Strengths

Tactical intelligence and positioning:

He is renowned for his excellent tactical awareness and positioning. Zubimendi reads the game exceptionally well, allowing him to intercept passes and break up opposition play efficiently. This ability is crucial for a defensive midfielder and would help Liverpool regain possession and launch counter-attacks swiftly. All evident in his recent exploits in the Euros, for best context.

Passing range and accuracy:

Zubimendi possesses an impressive passing range, capable of executing both short, intricate passes and long, cross-field deliveries with high accuracy. His ability to distribute the ball effectively can help Liverpool transition from defence to attack smoothly, maintaining their high-tempo playing style.

Composure under pressure:

He sees himself compared to Busquets and Alonso, for crying out loud. This is literally his trademark. He rarely gets flustered when pressed by opponents, which is essential in maintaining control and stability in midfield. This composure would be invaluable in the Premier League, where high-intensity pressing is commonplace.

Defensive contribution:

He excels in his defensive duties, boasting impressive tackling and interception statistics. His presence would provide a robust shield in front of Liverpool’s defence, alleviating pressure on the backline and adding an extra layer of security. Check his FBRef page out. Similar players include one-time Liverpool target Aurelien Tchouameni and Wataru Endo, the Samurai of course.

Weaknesses

Physicality:

While Zubimendi is technically proficient, he lacks the physicality that some of the more imposing defensive midfielders possess. This could be a potential drawback in the physically demanding Premier League, where strength and physical presence are crucial. However, that is also something loads of people had to say about Busquets, but here we are.

Premier League:

Transitioning from La Liga to the Premier League can be challenging due to the differences in playing style and intensity. There might be an adaptation period for Zubimendi as he acclimates to the pace and physicality of English football.

Opportunities

Strengthening Liverpool’s Midfield:

With Wataru Endo being the only senior defensive midfielder at Liverpool, Zubimendi’s arrival would significantly bolster the squad’s depth. He would provide much-needed competition and cover in the defensive midfield role, ensuring that the team is not overly reliant on Endo.

Development of Young Talents:

Zubimendi’s presence could also aid in the development of Liverpool’s young midfielders like Tyler Morton and Stefan Bajcetic among other up-and-coming names. His experience and mastery of talking football with the kids would serve as a valuable learning opportunity for these youngsters, helping them develop their skills and understanding of the game.

Long-term solution:

At 25, Zubimendi is entering the prime years of his career. Securing his services would provide Liverpool with a long-term solution in the defensive midfield position, ensuring stability and continuity in that crucial role for years to come.

Tactical Flexibility:

Zubimendi’s versatility and ability to play in various midfield roles would offer tactical flexibility to Liverpool. Whether in a 4-3-3 as a lone defensive midfielder or in a double pivot in a 4-2-3-1, Zubimendi can adapt and perform effectively, providing Arne Slot with valuable tactical options.

Loan Market:

Zubimendi’s arrival could allow players like Morton and Bajcetic to gain valuable first-team experience elsewhere, ensuring they return ready to compete at the highest level.

Threats

Injury Concerns:

Injuries are an inherent risk in football, and any long-term absence of a key player like Zubimendi could disrupt the team’s stability. Liverpool must consider this risk and ensure they have adequate depth to cope with potential injuries. In that case, the “Loan Market” opportunity that we just mentioned before shall see itself negated.

Adjustment to Premier League Intensity:

The intensity and pace of the Premier League can be a significant challenge for players coming from other leagues. Zubimendi would need to quickly adapt to the demands of English football to avoid any potential dip in performance.

All in all, Martin Zubimendi is a great option for Liverpool to strengthen their midfield. His smart tactics, excellent passing, solid defence, and aerial skills make him a top choice to improve the team’s quality and depth. While he has a few minor weaknesses, his strengths are much more significant. Bringing Zubimendi on board could really boost Liverpool’s midfield performance.
