Liverpool have been dealt a transfer blow by Arsenal as news has emerged regarding Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain signing a new contract with the Gunners. ‘The Ox’ is currently entering the final year of his existing contract with Arsenal and it looked like it was possible to lure him away from the Emirates Stadium.

However, Mirror has now reported that Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to sign a new contract with the North Londoners, effectively ending our hopes of signing the talented Englishman.

The midfielder made 45 appearances for the Gunners last term and scored 6 goals and 11 assists. Chamberlain played in an astonishing 8 positions for Arsene Wenger this season! Talk about versatility. He played everywhere in the midfield and featured as a wing-back on both the flanks as well.

Although he would have been a brilliant addition to Liverpool’s ranks, Arsenal have now made it clear that they are determined to keep him and have begun talks over a new deal worth in excess of £100,000-a-week. The report on Mirror also states that Arsenal are confident that Chamberlain will sign the contract with Arsenal and stay at the Emirates Stadium.

It looks like the youngster was only waiting for Arsene Wenger to make a decision on his own future. The Frenchman signed a two-year contract extension and confirmed his stay with Arsenal for a couple of more years. Whether or not if it is a good move remains to be seen, but it seems like his presence is the only thing that is keeping Arsenal’s players at their club, after a piss poor season that saw them miss out on Champions League qualification.

Though it is only an offer that has been made by Arsenal, we can still hope for Oxlade-Chamberlain to reject the deal and look for opportunities elsewhere. After all, there is no Champions League football on offer, neither is a guarantee of winning the league.

It certainly looks clear that Arsenal are in the league only to make up the numbers and so Chamberlain would benefit by joining us this summer. The boys at Anfield are far more motivated to win the league than what Arsenal players are and Chamberlain would only make us better as he is one of the very few players at the Emirates who seem motivated to succeed.

Do you think we will be able to sign Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer?
