With England going down the drain, many players from Liverpool’s squad will be travelling back to their homeland. It was really hard for the English fans to see their nation losing to the underdogs, but cheers to Iceland and their players.
It was expected that 3 Lions would go further this time as they had a young and dynamic squad, but it seemed like the players didn’t lacked desire, they lacked experience and this could well be a lesson for them as well as for their manager.
Besides England, Slovakia has also been eliminated with the hands of the world champions Germany. The Germans thrashed the Slovaks with an impressive score line of 3 goals to nil, and therefore, ended the run for Liverpool’s defender Martin Skrtel.
With five Liverpool player travelling back, he we will discuss how Liverpool players fared in this ongoing European Championship:
The 25-year-old former Southampton man was left out due to the brilliance of Kyle Walker in the opening two games, was given his chance against Slovakia and played full 90-minutes and won 57% percent of his duels, completing 95% of his passes. He was arguably one of the best performers for England in that game, but was left out in the defeat against Iceland.
The 28-year-old English attacker started the first three games for the Three Lions including the Slovakia game, when others were rested and was taken off in the second half of the last two games. He was an unused substitute against Iceland. Lallana was one of the most consistent performers for the side, but was criticized as he lacked the end product.
The 30-year-old made only one appearance for the side as a late substitute in the 1-1 draw against Russia, featuring for no more than five minutes.
The skipper was left out of the first two games, but featured in the 0-0 draw against Slovakia and that was his first and the last appearance in the tournament.
The 26-year-old former Chelsea attacker played three games. He was an unused substitute against Russia, came on at half time against Wales and scored the winning goal for the side, and started in the game against Slovakia. He also started the game against Iceland, but failed to prevent the elimination.
Started Wales’ Group B opener against Slovakia as Wayne Hennessey’s missed due to his injury, but has been dropped back down to the bench as expected.
Arguably one of the best performers in the Welsh side. He started every single game for the side, and was substituted the end of the win over Russia. He was officially voted man of the match against Slovakia, and set up Aaron Ramsey with an exquisite ball for the opener against Russia. The Welsh Xavi has created 5 chances till date and has bagged 1 assist. With 855 of passing accuracy, he has won 52% of his average duels.
The 31-year-old played every single game for his side. He did a great job against Wales, Russia and was the top man in the team against England, but came out as a liability against the Germans. He won 59% of his duels and had 87% of passing accuracy.
He has been given two run chances from the bench against Ireland and Sweden, but have totalled just 11 minutes altogether, on both occasions with the job already done.
Being a number 2 choice behind Courtois, he has remained on the bench.
Has made just 2 appearances as substitute; against Italy with 17 minutes remaining, and was a stoppage time arrival against Sweden.
In contention to begin as right back at the start of the tournament, but he has been an unused sub in all four games so far thanks to the brilliant partnership of Toni Kroos and Sami Khedira in the German midfield.
