Speaking on talkSPORT via Youtube, Reds legend Graeme Souness believes Mohamed Salah made a “secret” deal with Liverpool last summer, agreeing to stay at Anfield for one more year before leaving at the end of the season.

Ever since his dramatic altercation with Jurgen Klopp on the touchline this past weekend, the Egyptian’s future at Anfield is a matter of much debate. While David Ornstein has since confirmed that Salah will be offered a contract extension, it has far from succeeded in putting out the fire.

Souness, an Anfield legend, has expressed concern about Salah’s recent performances, suggesting that the Egyptian forward’s focus may have waned amid potential transfer speculation.

Despite the Egyptian’s significant contributions to Liverpool over the past seven seasons, Souness believes that the star attacker’s form has been inconsistent as of late. He further indicated that there is a possibility Salah could depart Liverpool in the upcoming transfer window, particularly if he receives an enticing offer from a Saudi Arabian club.

“I think there’s a real chance. There’s every chance that he’s done a deal with Liverpool last summer, with all the interest from Saudi Arabia, to give them another year. It’s a bit like Ronaldo at Man United; he gave them another year and then went off to Real Madrid.”

“I think there’s every possibility that is the case. He’s been marvelous for Liverpool, but I think he’s had his head turned. He’s going back to his mother tongue, so at his age and with everything else, I think there’s every chance that transfer to Saudi Arabia will happen.”

For now, we cannot be sure as to where Salah and the club stand. However, it should become clearer in the weeks to come. With Arne Slot coming in, some difficult decisions will need to be made.

Salah has been a wonderful asset for Liverpool, as he has scored 210 goals in 346 games for the Reds. However, he is not getting any younger and now might be the best time to cash-in. Despite his age, Salah should fetch a handsome amount that can go a long way in aiding the Liverpool rebuild.
