Former Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam also shared his views about the goalkeeping situation at the club. The Reds didn’t keep a clean sheet against Watford as Loris Karius conceded a second-half goal. This ensured that the Merseyside club only have kept one clean sheet all season in the Premier League.
The current Stoke City midfielder had one goalkeeper in mind as he was quoted by Football Insider 24/7 as saying:
“I don’t think they’ve had a top goalkeeper since Reina.
“I don’t feel comfortable with Loris Karius, he’s still very young but he doesn’t impress me. I thought they would have broke the bank to get Joe Hart to Anfield in the summer.”
Pepe Reina is plying his trade in Italy with Napoli and the Reds have struggled to find a great replacement for the Spaniard since he left the side. Simon Mignolet was given the job between the sticks but the Belgian’s time at Anfield has been littered with mistakes.
The Belgian was then replaced in the summer with Loris Karius, the 23-year-old goalkeeper from Mainz. But the German hasn’t had the greatest of times either and still does not look like the finished product.
Many had tipped Liverpool to try and sign Joe Hart when Pep Guardiola made it clear that the England international would not be number one at Manchester City. The 29-year-old was replaced by Barcelona goalkeeper Claudio Bravo and in search of first team football; Hart went on to sign for Torino in the Serie A on loan.
The move did come as a surprise given that there were other Premier League clubs looking to sign the experienced keeper. Hart, for his part, has now settled in well at the Serie A club, despite a rather poor start which was highlighted due to a glaring error.
Coming back to Liverpool, Hart would have been an excellent signing but the Reds had already conducted business in bringing in Karius. Klopp does see the German as the number one for years to come and bringing in Hart would only lead to more problems.
Offloading Simon Mignolet would not have been easy as the Belgian was the number one when Karius broke his hand in preseason. Hart’s price would have been another factor and in all probability, Guardiola would not have wanted to sell a good player to a direct rival.
Karius did have a few great saves in the game against Watford and did look assured at the back. He could not have done much to stop the goal he conceded but his performance would have pleased Klopp and certainly lays down a marker about his abilities as he spends more time in England and Liverpool.
