More Bad News For Liverpool As Key Midfielder To Miss Pre-Season Preparations

Liverpool’s German midfielder Emre Can will miss the start of pre-season training for next season after being named in Germany’s 23-man squad for the Confederations Cup in Russia this summer. The 23-year-old has been called up by his national coach Joachim Low for the tournament which takes place from June 17 to July 2.

Can is likely to be granted three weeks off by Jurgen Klopp after the Confederations Cup. So if Germany go all the way to the final then he won’t be reporting back for club duty at Melwood until around July 23 – meaning he would miss the pre-season tour of the Far East.

The well-built midfielder has been in good form ever since he was slotted into the Liverpool lineup after Jordan Henderson’s injury. Can has made proper use of the opportunity and surely, he’d have given Jurgen Klopp plenty think about.

It will be a happy selection headache for Klopp once Henderson returns to full fitness. But with European football assured for next season, all the players should get their fair share of chances next term. Notably, Can also missed last season’s preparation as he was part of the Germany squad at Euro’16 tournament.

Germany are in Group B for the Confederations Cup with Cameroon, Chile and Australia. Hosts Russia are in Group A with New Zealand, Portugal and Mexico.

Low was quoted by Liverpool Echo as saying: “We have a lot of young players with huge potential and the squad has been chosen following extensive talks.”

Can is set to enter the final year of his current Liverpool contract and has not signed a contract extension yet. Klopp will be keen on holding on to the talented German, who has proved his qualities this season. He’d be a part of the plans under Jurgen Klopp and so there will be no worries regarding his involvement on the pitch.

However, the contract negotiations may go down to both the parties agreeing on a favourable salary package and if everything goes well, it would be a really massive breakthrough as letting go of a player of Emre Can’s quality for free would be a bad piece of business.
