Liverpool To Make January Move For Out-of-contract £35,000-a-week Serie A Defender

January could turn out to be a busy month for Liverpool according to sources from Italy. Sport Mediaset via the Daily Star claims that the Reds will be adding a Dutch defender to their team in the winter window and it will not be Virgil van Dijk.

The report suggests that we will sign Stefan de Vrij of Lazio, a player that has been constantly linked with us for the past month or so. Ever since we failed to sign the Southampton man, all our efforts seem to be focused on the Lazio star.

De Vrij certainly is one of the better defenders in the Serie A and it is a little out of place as to why no Premier League club has moved for him. Other Dutch defenders such as Bruno Martins Indi have moved to the Premier League and they have done pretty well, so it would not be a surprise if De Vrij can carry his good form to England as well.

The 25-year-old would be out of a contract in the summer and would move for free but Liverpool could end up signing the player in the winter window for a cut-price deal. Lazio and De Vrij are not in any contract talks at the moment and that could open the gates for us and a number of other clubs to swoop in for the 25-year-old.

There is another factor that would work in our favour, and that is paying him a lot of money. The report states that the Dutch international is only on £35,000-a-week and we could easily double it, if not triple it, to bring him to Anfield.

We might not have kept a clean sheet since the 4-0 win over Arsenal but there is still hope since we have only lost one game all season.

Sure, many would suggest that we could have won the games against Burnley, Newcastle United and Sevilla had we defended better, and maybe this is one reason why Jurgen Klopp and team are looking to add another defender in the winter window.

Virgil van Dijk might be a bridge too far to cross in the winter window but his international teammate will surely be a great option to have and would certainly make our defence much better.
