Liverpool’s trusted correspondent makes huge transfer claim about Klopp’s summer plans

Simon Mignolet

Liverpool will undoubtedly be buying a new goalkeeper in the summer, reckons the most trusted Anfield correspondent, James Pearce. A supporter tweeted on Twitter saying that he was waiting for Pearce to claim that Liverpool were not going to buy a goalkeeper in the summer. However, Pearce replied on Twitter, saying that the supporter would have to wait a long time for that to happen.

The decision has been taken by manager Jurgen Klopp, his backroom staff and analysts that Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius are not up to the mark at Anfield. This has prompted goalkeeper Mignolet into admitting that he was considering his future at the club after Loris Karius took over as the first-choice.

The Belgium international has not played since the New Year’s Day win at Burnley and before Sunday’s victory over Manchester City, manager Jurgen Klopp effectively said that the place was Karius’ to lose.

While the German failed to repay the manager’s faith with his performance against Pep Guardiola’s side, allowing Leroy Sane to beat him at his near post, Karius is expected to be between the sticks again for Monday’s trip to Swansea City.

That has left Mignolet, who has been Liverpool’s established No.1 since arriving from Sunderland in the summer of 2013, considering his options.

Liverpool have been linked with moves for Stoke City’s Jack Butland and Roma’s Alisson in recent weeks. Mignolet is concerned that a lack of first-team football could affect his World Cup chances and hinted that he could consider leaving the club.

“10 days ago, after the game against Burnley, I had a conversation with Klopp,” Mignolet told Sporza.

“In the Christmas period we had rotated again and I felt that that was not a healthy situation for a keeper. Klopp then told me when Sunday was confirmed before and after the match, but of course I’m not happy with that, but no heavy words have come afterwards.

“Klopp told me that honestly and personally in that interview, of course I am not satisfied with that, but I always have to respect the trainer’s decision. After everything that has happened this season, I know where I stand and the situation has become clearer.”

Interestingly, Pearce adds that Mignolet will stay at Liverpool until the summer and try to become the club’s No.1 stopper, but tips that the summer of 2018 may be the end for the Belgian.

Mignolet’s future at Anfield looks to be in serious doubt as Klopp is likely to pursue a new goalkeeper in the summer.
