Gareth Southgate provides an update on Joe Gomez injury – reports

As per a report from Liverpool’s official website, England manager Gareth Southgate has provided an update on Joe Gomez, who was forced off 10 minutes into the friendly with the Netherlands on Friday night. He suffered an ankle injury whilst landing awkwardly from a tough aerial challenge.

The 20-year-old looked in severe pain and after lengthy treatment on the side of the pitch, Gomez hobbled and headed straight down the tunnel with Leicester City defender Harry Maguire replacing him.

“We need to have a closer look,” England manager Gareth Southgate told BBC after the 1-0 win over the Netherlands. (h/t Liverpoolfc.com)

“We didn’t like the way he landed, he was knocked in the air. We don’t know at the moment, we need to check that.”

This has led to several Liverpool supporters sweating over the seriousness of Gomez’ injury. The defender had finally managed to play his way back into the Liverpool first team scene after a lengthy spell away due to an ACL injury. Gomez has been mostly deployed at right-back this season, but Klopp is expected to move him into the centre-back position in the near future.

Southgate’s selection of Gomez clearly tells that the England manager is impressed with the 20-year-old’s versatility. His composure on the ball and athleticism must have surely played a role in his inclusion Gomez in the England squad.

Unfortunately, he didn’t last long against the Netherlands and the potential scans will further reveal the extent of the injury. Let’s hope nothing is serious and Gomez returns to full fitness soon with both Liverpool and the national team this season.

However, any lengthy injury layoff would seriously puncture Gomez’s hopes of making the plane to Russia this summer.
