Riyad Mahrez had the chance to give Manchester City the lead against Liverpool, thanks to a penalty kick in the 85th minute.
The Algerian took the kick away from Gabriel Jesus and then fired the ball over the bar. The match ended 0-0, but this was the best chance in a game where the defences came out on top.
Liverpool didn’t really create much going forward, despite their daunting front three. City, for their part, looked sharper in attack and Alisson had to make a couple of smart, low saves.
The talking point about the penalty won’t die down, though. This was a clash between two of the best teams in the Premier League, and a win for either side would have given them a huge boost for the rest of the season.
Virgil van Dijk was the culprit who gave the penalty away. The Dutch defender tackled Leroy Sane but missed the ball and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
Mahrez’s penalty miss was the butt of a number of jokes from the Liverpool fans and here are some of the best from Twitter.
