Georginio Wijnaldum has revealed what makes Virgil van Dijk so great and how his price tag isn’t a big deal. The Dutch defender was signed for £75m (h/t Mirror) at the start of 2018 and has only grown in stature at Anfield.
Wijnaldum was speaking to the Liverpool Echo (h/t Mirror) and claimed his Netherlands teammate handled the pressure well:
“Virgil has fitted in so well. He’s a player I knew before from our time together in the Netherlands squad. When he signed there was a lot of talk about the transfer fee but he didn’t decide that.
“Of course it brought a lot of pressure for him but he has handled it so well. Nobody speaks about the fee anymore. Everybody says that he was a massive transfer for us because he has helped us so much.”
The Dutch midfielder added that Van Dijk had backed up his transfer fee with his performances and that he knew of the defender’s quality:
“I knew he would do really well – he’s so strong in the air and comfortable in possession. He’s always talking and is a leader back there.”
The Reds have been tight in defence and the days of our leaky defence are long gone. Van Dijk has helped us to the top of the Premier League table and is possibly the best defender in the Premier League.
