Red Bull football chief will not let Liverpool target’s contract reach final year

Oliver Mintzlaff, the global head of soccer at Red Bull GmbH, owners of RB Leipzig, has claimed that the club won’t allow star striker Timo Werner’s contract to run till the last year.

The 22-year-old has been in decent touch this season with 11 goals from 17 Bundesliga appearances and has been linked with Liverpool

The German is contracted at the club till 2020 and the report adds that Leipzig will try to convince the striker to sign a new deal or sell him.

This could attract the interest of other clubs who believe a deal can be finalised for the right price (h/t ESPN).

Speaking to Kicker (h/t ESPN), Mintzlaff said:

“A club like ours cannot afford to have Timo Werner go into a final contract year.”

The Reds have shuffled the pack this season and deployed Mohamed Salah as a striker too, but Werner would be an excellent signing given his potential.

The Leipzig man is a German international and participated in a disappointing World Cup in the summer. However, that hasn’t hurt his confidence as he is racking up the goals for his Bundesliga club this season.
