Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has claimed the club will not sign a centre-back in the January window.
The Reds have a couple of star defenders out with injury as Joel Matip and Joe Gomez recover. The Premier League leaders also sent Nathaniel Clyne away on loan but Klopp is not willing to dip into the transfer market (h/t Liverpoolfc.com).
“But we cannot, we will not sign a centre-half for one game or whatever, that will not happen.”
The manager added that the pair of centre-backs could return after the Brighton game, and that would be great news for the rest of the campaign.
“Joe and Joel look good – obviously not good enough for Monday, not good enough I would say for the game after that, for Brighton, [but] hopefully then they are at least in full team training.”
The Reds have performed well even without the pair as Dejan Lovren stepped up in their absence. The Croatian didn’t have a great game in our 2-1 loss to Manchester City, however, we should be able to cope without Gomez or Matip for a few weeks.
Liverpool don’t have the most testing fixtures in the next month or so, and we should be able to keep our place at the top of the Premier League table.
A four-point lead isn’t cause for celebration yet, but Gomez could make us a tougher unit to break down, and that should mean more wins for the remainder of the season.
