Paul Merson believes that Liverpool’s elimination from the FA Cup is the “best thing” that could have happened to the Reds.
Jurgen Klopp made several changes to the side with youngsters Rafa Camacho, Curtis Jones and Ki-Jana Hoever getting valuable minutes. However, we were beaten 2-1 by Wolverhampton Wanderers thanks to a Ruben Neves stunner.
The Reds lead the Premier League by four points over Manchester City and Merson told the Debate (h/t Express) that the Reds should not consider this game’s result as important:
“I just think it’s another game out the way.
“They’ve got a two-week break after playing a couple more league games and recharge their batteries.
“They’re in an unbelievable position to make history, they haven’t won the league in 29 years.”
The pundit added that the team should not think about the Champions League and should only concentrate on the Premier League.
The former Arsenal man added that the two defeats should not make a huge difference to the Reds given that we lost to City, one of the best teams in the world, and made wholesale changes against Wolves.
“For me, it could be the best thing that happened to them”, concluded the former England international.
Merson does have a point in suggesting that we should only think about the league but there is a long way to go before the season ends.
City seem to be finding their gear after their 7-0 win in the FA Cup, but Jurgen Klopp should be able to wipe our consecutive defeats off the minds of the players.
Liverpool face a tough away trip to Brighton at the weekend, but we should have the quality to get the three points over the Seagulls.
