Jamie Carragher surprised at Jurgen Klopp’s decision during winter transfer window

Nathaniel Clyne of Liverpool

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher expressed his surprise at Jurgen Klopp’s decision to send Nathaniel Clyne to Bournemouth.

The right-back played a few games for us when Trent Alexander-Arnold was injured or rested and did a decent job in our win over Manchester United.

Klopp allowed the former Southampton defender to join the Cherries till the end of the season, and Carragher claimed Clyne would provide consistency to his new club before claiming his surprise at the deal (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“But I was surprised Liverpool let him go, I must say that.

“I know he hasn’t been involved for a long time, but Liverpool have got young players there.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold, Gomez. He’s a bit more experienced.”

The former Reds defender stated that he was impressed with Clyne in the win over the Red Devils, but also highlighted the situation at Anfield.

“But maybe Klopp sees him every day on the training pitch, hasn’t been easy for him, and a player at that age obviously must want to play as much football as possible.”

Trent and Joe Gomez were preferred to Clyne since last season when the right-back picked up an injury. The former Southampton star is only 27 and needs regular first-team action, and the move makes sense as he started in Bournemouth’s game against Everton.

Gomez should return to action in a few weeks after recovering from a fracture. The youngster was fantastic alongside Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the defence before his injury.

Clyne could still have a role for the Reds next season, and that would depend on his performances for Bournemouth in the remainder of the campaign.
