German expert claims that this prolific Bundesliga star is not a priority for Liverpool

German football expert Raphael Honigstein has claimed that Timo Werner is not a priority signing for Liverpool. The RB Leipzig striker has been linked with a move to Anfield (h/t Express) and has just 18 months left on his contract.

Although Werner would make an excellent signing for the Premier League leaders, Honigstein believed (while writing for ESPN) the Reds are looking at defensive options.

The Bundesliga expert claimed the German striker would cost a fair bit but the Reds want someone who can play in the heart of the defence or as a full-back (h/t Express

“And what about Liverpool? Klopp’s insistence that the squad is now ‘complete’ would suggest that a fourth transition-type forward for a total outlay north of €100m (£86.8m) might not be a priority right now.

“LFC are probably more interested in bringing in a versatile centre-back with the ability to deputise in wide areas.”

However, Honigstein was quick to add that Werner would fit into the Liverpool attack really well. The expert further believed the forward’s price-tag is relatively cheap compared to the Premier League standards.

Liverpool would also see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain return soon, however, Honigstein claimed the Reds could do with another attacker in the side.

Jurgen Klopp sold Dominic Solanke to Bournemouth in the winter window. That leaves us with just Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge as cover for our preferred front three.

Liverpool need to spend a bit in the summer window if we are to make the side stronger. It will be interesting to see which players we target but we could do with more quality at the back too.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have been excellent this season, but injuries to our defence have put Klopp in a conundrum. Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip have only recently returned from injury while Van Dijk is carrying an illness.

The German might have to play Fabinho in the defence against Leicester, as Trent Alexander-Arnold is a doubt for the clash.
