Relief for Liverpool as star declares himself fit for Southampton game despite ice pack on ankle

Latest Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk declares he will be fit for Southampton clash

Virgil van Dijk picked up a slight injury in the 2-1 win over Tottenham on Sunday.

The Dutch defender injured his ankle as he defended a two-on-one situation with Moussa Sissoko and Son Heung-min racing towards the Liverpool goal.

The centre-back ensured Sissoko kept the ball and the Frenchman blasted over the Liverpool goal. Van Dijk tried to close him down in the box, and that was where the two collided.

Jurgen Klopp wasn’t sure about the extent of the injury and hoped it was nothing serious (h/t Sky Sports):

“I don’t know if he twisted it or it is a knock. He was walking to the interviews with a big ice pack (on his ankle).

“I hope it’s nothing serious but I don’t know yet. We have to see.”

However, Van Dijk told the Liverpool Echo (h/t Sky Sports) he was ready to face his former side, Southampton on Friday:

“I hurt my ankle but hopefully it’s not too bad.

“It hurts, but we will take a look at it. I’ll be fine for Friday.”

Van Dijk doing the business again

This was another imperious display by Van Dijk at the back. That moment to stop Sissoko from scoring certainly will be pivotal for the remainder of the season.

Liverpool now lead the Premier League by two points having played a game more than Manchester City.

The Reds have six more league fixtures left, and Van Dijk’s form will be crucial to us winning the remaining fixtures.

Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Babel

Both City and Liverpool know there is no room for error, and the Dutch defender has been doing his bit for the Reds all season.

Barring the penalty against Manchester City and the mistake against Fulham before the international break, Van Dijk has not put a foot wrong in the Premier League for us.

Hopefully, he continues playing the same way and we finish the season by winning all our games.
