Liverpool FC transfer news: Steve Nicol wants Liverpool to sign Toby Alderweireld as Virgil van Dijk partner

Former Liverpool star Steve Nicol wants the Reds to raid Tottenham for Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgian defender will have one year left on his contract at the end of this season, and the Daily Star

Nicol was quoted by the Daily Star claiming that Alderweireld is 100 per cent leaving and believed he would be a great partner for Virgil van Dijk:

“Again, this is a player who I think most teams in the world would want as their centre-back.

“I wouldn’t mind him at Liverpool alongside Van Dijk, I think that would be a great pairing.”

The former Red also added that Alderweireld would have his pick of clubs to choose from, and he had to decide whether he wants trophies or more money.

“If he wants to move for money, he will go for the highest bidder regardless.

“But if he wants trophies, and you’ve got someone like Varane wanting to leave Real Madrid, I wouldn’t be shocked if that was where he turns up.”

Van Dijk is flying high at Liverpool

The Dutch defender has been excellent for the Reds since his move from Southampton. The 27-year-old has also made the other defenders in the team better, and that is showing this season.

Liverpool have only conceded 19 goals from 32 Premier League games. The Reds have Joe Gomez, who was excellent before his injury in December, waiting to make a return to the side.

Joel Matip has done a great job in the second half of the season while Dejan Lovren’s campaign has been hampered by several injuries.
