Liverpool FC transfer news: Matthijs de Ligt’s wages could be a problem for Liverpool

The Mirror reports that Matthijs de Ligt’s agent Mino Raiola sees Liverpool as the ideal destination for his client and wants him to team-up with Virgil van Dijk.

The pair is already playing for the national team and starred in the 3-1 win over England in the Nations League semi-finals.

The report adds that six big clubs are interested in the 19-year-old defender, with Manchester City in the fray too.

Liverpool would have to make De Ligt their highest paid player ever ahead of Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk, or give them a pay raise too, according to the report.

Big wages on offer for De Ligt

Manchester United are offering the 19-year-old £236,000-a-week while PSG are willing to take that up to £256,000-a-week, according to the report.

Mohamed Salah earns £200k-per-week at Liverpool while Van Dijk currently gets £150k-a-week. The report claims that Jurgen Klopp could be worried about the pitfalls of offering a youngster a better deal than his experienced stars.

De Ligt led Ajax to the Dutch league title and the semi-finals of the Champions League. The report adds that the 19-year-old will make an announcement on his future next week, with Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the running for his signature.

The Dutch defender would be an excellent signing for Liverpool but breaking our wage stricture seems a little excessive given that our defence isn’t a problem area any more.
