Latest Liverpool news: Van Dijk wins UEFA Player of the Year beating Messi and Ronaldo

It was a great night for Liverpool in the Champions League draw on Thursday.

The Reds were drawn against Napoli, Genk and RB Salzburg, which seems to be a great draw for the European champions, and a couple of our players picked up prizes too.

Virgil van Dijk and Alisson were adjudged as the best defender and goalkeeper in Europe last season respectively, but the Dutchman had more reasons to celebrate.

The former Southampton star picked up the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award for the 2018/19 season, and beat the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Eden Hazard, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, to name a few.

Van Dijk easily beats Messi for top award

The Dutch colossus helped us win the Champions League and we narrowly missed out on the Premier League title too.

The centre-back even scored some important goals for us in the campaign, and Van Dijk was 98 points ahead of Messi after the votes were calculated

.

Ronaldo came a distant third, claiming 200 lesser than Van Dijk while Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah finished behind the Portugal attacker.

Van Dijk was the best player in the Premier League last season, and he has started this campaign in fine fashion.

The award was more proof that signing Van Dijk was one of the best decisions taken by Jurgen Klopp, and the Dutchman has more quality years left at the club.
