Liverpool could be thrown out of the league cup as EFL begin investigation over player ineligibility

Liverpool could be thrown out of the Carabao Cup due to the possible fielding of ineligible player

Liverpool face expulsion from the Carabao Cup as the EFL start an investigation regarding the fielding of an ineligible player, according to The Athletic (h/t Mirror).

The Reds won the third round clash against MK Dons with a great performance. Several youngsters were handed a start by Jurgen Klopp, with Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Ki-Jana Hoever all impressing.

The report claims that the EFL are looking into one of the players who might not have been registered to feature in the competition.

Liverpool are set to host Arsenal in the fourth round, and a spokesman for the club confirmed to the Athletic that an investigation is being conducted (h/t Mirror):

“The club are aware of a potential administrative issue pertaining to one of our players.

“We are working with the relevant authorities in order to establish the facts of the matter and will be making no further comment until this process is complete.”

Pedro Chirivella was brought on as Naby Keita’s replacement against the Dons, and the Liverpool Echo claims it is the Spaniard who is being investigated.

Liverpool could escape with a fine

Sunderland had fallen foul regarding the same rules a few years ago, with Ji Dong-Won featuring for the side in the competition.

Ji didn’t have international clearance after a spell in Germany, but the Black Cats escaped with a fine (h/t Mirror).

It will be interesting to see what kind of punishment is handed out if the Reds are found guilty. The Reds dominated the game against the Dons, and Jurgen Klopp could have fielded more youngsters in the coming rounds.
