Ian McGarry believes that Xherdan Shaqiri could make way for Timo Werner at Liverpool.
The Swiss star has struggled for regular minutes since joining from Stoke City and is currently injured.
Shaqiri is a quality player and did well in some games last season but McGarry believes that there will be interest in him in January (h/t Daily Star).
The journalist also claimed that the Swiss star could leave the Reds in the summer, with Werner replacing him.
McGarry was speaking on Reach PLC’s Transfer Window podcast and claimed that Werner could play anywhere across the front-line before highlighting Shaqiri’s problems (h/t Daily Star
)“Given how important the front three upfront are to Liverpool and how they play, I think Shaqiri was bought in to potentially be one of the spaces but clearly his mobility and speed are not up to it.
“He’s certainly got a good eye for a pass but he can’t keep pace with the type of attacking influence Liverpool have.”
The journalist added that Shaqiri was unhappy on the bench and that he wouldn’t be surprised if the player left in the coming months:
“It wouldn’t surprise me if there was interest in Shaqiri in January and indeed if he left the club in the next seven or eight months anyway.
“Now, of course, that would free up a space for Werner in the squad.”
McGarry went on to claim that Werner could be signed by the Reds in January and sent back to Leipzig on loan.
That would allow the German to get a proper pre-season for us before starting his career at Anfield.
The journalist added that the Reds would improve with Werner. However, he did suggest that Werner would have no issues finding a starting spot at Anfield.
Liverpool need quality cover for the front three and Werner is just 23 at the moment. The German would be an excellent replacement for Shaqiri but he should be open to spending time on the bench.
Shaqiri, for his part, needs to get fit again and prove his abilities on the pitch. The Swiss star is a great option to have on the bench and hopefully, he returns to action soon.
