“Won’t go away” – Liverpool defender shares extent of damage after pulling out of international duty

Andy Robertson explains why he didn’t join Scotland for Euro 2020 qualifiers

Andy Robertson was one of three Premier League players to pull out of Scotland’s upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers.

The Scot helped Liverpool beat Manchester City at the weekend and produced an assist for the second goal as well.

Robertson is one of the best full-backs in the world but Scotland have no chance of qualifying from their Euro 2020 group.

They do have a playoff later in March, and the Liverpool defender wanted to remain fit for the rest of the campaign and not hurt himself further (h/t Daily Record

):

“I don’t care what game it is, I want to play it and my track record in the last five years has shown that. But I don’t want to pick up more injuries and ruin my season because of it.

“The games in March are so big for us and will decide whether we go to a major tournament or not so we all have to be fully fit and fully firing and hopefully confident after these two results.”

The Scotland captain added that the decision wasn’t in his hands and revealed that his ankle had “swollen up again”.

Robbo also confirmed that he had been playing with an injury and needed time to heal it:

“It’s a niggling injury which won’t go away unless I give it time. If you know Liverpool and our schedule we don’t have time and after suffering another knock against Man City on Sunday it has gotten worse.”

Liverpool need Robbo to stay fit

The 25-year-old has already provided four assists in the Premier League this season and has two goals to his name too.

Liverpool need their left-back to be fit for the entire campaign, and we have a packed schedule coming up too.

The two weeks should help Robertson’s ankle heel and it will be interesting to see if the Scot is back for our trip to Crystal Palace.

The Reds also host Napoli in the Champions League after that, and we would need Robbo for that game too.
