In a conversation with former teammate, Danny Murphy for the Daily Mail, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has opened up on the possibility of a return to Anfield in the future.
The Rangers boss insists that he will only return to the club in a managerial capacity only if he is a good candidate in the eyes of the club and the owners.
The 39-year-old spent 17 seasons at Anfield and scored 186 goals in 710 appearances. He is widely considered to be one of the best players to don the Redshirt. (h/t Whoscored)
Gerrard left Liverpool to join MLS side LA Galaxy in 2015 before hanging up his boots in 2016. He then rejoined the Reds as a youth coach before taking over as the head coach at Rangers in 2017.
Gerrard is widely considered to be a leading candidate to take over from Jurgen Klopp then the German decides to leave his post. The former-captain however, accepts that he will need to be an accomplished candidate for that to happen.
He claimed
to understand the motivations of the fanbase who want him at the club but accepts that it is unlikely unless he proves himself and the owners think he is the right man for the job.“They aren’t going to pick me if I am only the 20th best candidate.”
Calling management a steep learning curve, the Rangers boss accepts that he may not be ready to take the Liverpool job yet. He also admitted to wanting to be prepared if the opportunity came calling.
“Am I ready for the Liverpool job right now? Maybe not.”
Gerrard lavished praise on his former England teammate Frank Lampard for the work he has done at Chelsea and hopes that one day he too can strike up a rivalry with Jose Mourinho.
