Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been very vocal about his admiration fo Anfield. There have been numerous occasions the past year where the Frenchman would wax lyrical about Liverpool’s famed home.
He feels Anfield is the primary reason for Liverpool’s turnarounds in Europe, according to BeIn Sport (h/t Liverpool Echo)
Wenger led Arsenal out at Anfield a number of times during his time with the Gunners. He knows all about what effect Liverpool’s home can have on opposition sides. The Legendary manager has won just seven of his 24
visits to the stadium. His warnings to Barcelona last season fell on deaf ears as the Reds overturned a 3-0 deficit to win the tie 4-3 at Anfield. The Frenchman called it the most heated stadium in Europe while reaffirming his belief that it is the one place where he doesn’t want to play a return leg.
“The only place you don’t want to go is to Anfield.”
Following Liverpool’s win over Manchester City last November, Wenger once again praised the place, calling it a stadium with a soul.
“If Liverpool have changed games in Europe, for a big part it’s down to Anfield,”
The 70-year-old went on to call our home a real football field and went on to explain how the atmosphere in the ground unnerves the opposition. Wenger’s Arsenal too has had first-hand experience of Anfield on a European night. With the first leg ending 1-1, Emmanuel Adebayor looked to have put Arsenal through to the next round with eight minutes remaining. Pushed on by a defiant Anfield crowd, Liverpool scored twice more to win the game 4-2 and dump the Gunners out.
Liverpool are currently on a 43 game unbeaten run at Anfield. The Reds need just six more games to equal Wenger’s unbeaten run of 49 games with Arsenal.
He backed the Reds to break the record while also praising Klopp for aligning his team with the values of the city.
