Liverpool postpone landmark Hillsborough memorial service in light of coronavirus outbreak

Hillsborough memorial postponed due to coronavirus outbreak

Liverpool Football Club have decided to postpone the Hillsborough memorial at Anfield in light of the coronavirus pandemic, according to Liverpoolfc.com.

This year’s service was scheduled for the 15th of April on the 31st anniversary of the disaster where 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives. The year’s service was supposed to be the last service to be held at Anfield following a decision taken by the families.

In light of the outbreak, the Hillsborough Family Support Group (HFSG) has agreed to reschedule the service to a later date. People who are in possession of the tickets for the Anfield service have been asked to hold onto them for the rescheduled event.

The effect of Hillsborough on fans of the club have been unjust and traumatizing

The HFSG chair, Margaret Aspinall revealed that a collective decision was reached on postponing the service. She stated that the decision was taken with the intention of keeping as many people safe as possible.

“We hope to provide an update in the near future on a rescheduled date for the service.”

She also thanked everyone for their understanding of the matter and asked them to include the 96 lost souls in their prayers.

“I would also ask that you join us in our prayers on 15 April to remember the 96 and keep the families and everyone who has been affected in your thoughts at this difficult time.”

This year’s memorial is the last to be held at Anfield

The club’s official Twitter handle asked fans to refrain from any commentary that could affect the legal proceedings of the disaster.

“Please refrain from any commentary that could prejudice any legal proceedings in relation to the Hillsborough disaster.”
