Gary Neville says Liverpool’s victory will always be accompanied by an asterisk
Former Manchester United skipper Gary Neville has not had a season to celebrate. He had earlier predicted that United will win the title before Liverpool. Not only has he got the call spectacularly wrong but also seems keen to underplay the Reds’ achievement.
Liverpool are currently 25 points ahead and needs just six more points to guarantee the title. With the Premier League taking the decision to extend the Premier League season, there is hope that the league will be completed and Liverpool will end up lifting the trophy.
Surprisingly, Neville admits that even if the season goes completed, he will still accept Jurgen Klopp’s team as champions, but with a condition. He believes that Liverpool’s achievement will always carry the blotch that the season was not completed.
“I say give Liverpool the league and then I keep sending the little asterisk sign, a little note next to it, ‘Liverpool won the league but…”
Neville’s comments were made on Sky Sports, alongside former Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher on The Debate. Liverpool fans nor players will overtly mind the caveat if the Reds are handed the title, given our dominance this season.
25 reasons why!
Although Neville has a point, given his track record, he also comes across a sore loser. The Reds are comfortably the best team in the land right now and there are ’25’ points that prove why. 37 if you compare it to Neville’s former club. No wonder he isn’t happy about it.
The Premier League have reiterated their commitment to complete the current season before beginning the next one. The clubs are also likely to face a huge financial loss if the season goes uncompleted, with a number of them calling for closed-door matches.
All this could work out to Liverpool’s advantage if the league indeed continues to completion.

It will be ironic if Liverpool are given the title with the asterisk as Neville mentions. Although it could give him a savage pleasure, it will also mean that Manchester United will miss out on the Champions League given their current position.
The Red Devils are currently in a good run of form and pose a serious threat to 4th-placed Chelsea. It will be hilarious if we win the title and United fall short. Truly champagne popping stuff, something Neville will be intimately familiar with.
