Fernando Torres names three former Liverpool stars in his Dream XI

Fernando Torres selects three of his former Liverpool teammates in his ultimate XI

Former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has named three of his former Reds teammates in his dream team. Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, the Spaniard selected his best XI, with three ex-Reds making the cut into the side.

All the three former Liverpool stars selected by Torres are midfielders, with Javier Mascherano and Xabi Alonso getting the nod, along with club icon Steven Gerrard. Explaining his selection, the former striker described Mascherano as the ideal holding midfielder, highlighting his hard work and quality on the ball as his key attributes. (h/t Liverpool Echo

Alonso, a player Torres worked with at Liverpool and the Spanish national team, was picked by him as Mascherano’s partner in the middle. The former Real Madrid star forged an excellent partnership with Mascherano during his time at Anfield and it is easy to see why Torres has gone for that pairing.

‘Gerrard is my icon’ – Torres

Gerrard gets the nod in the attacking midfield slot in Torres’ side and is also named as the captain of the team. The Liverpool legend enjoyed a fruitful partnership with Torres during the latter’s stint at Anfield. And the former Spain international, who retired from football last year, went on to describe our former captain as the best player he had ever played with.

As quoted by Liverpool Echo, Torres said:

“In the midfield, in the more advanced position is Steven Gerrard, this is my icon player. The best player I’ve played with, I’ve said many times he is the player who completed my game. There is a before and after [Torres] since I started playing with him. [An] iconic player and captain of that team.”

As far as the rest of the ultimate XI is concerned, Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak features in goal, while Barcelona legends Xavi and Andres Iniesta complete the five-man midfield along with Mascherano, Alonso and Gerrard. Upfront, Torres picks himself alongside former Spain teammate David Villa.
