“They deserve this”: Wayne Rooney puts rivalry aside and backs Liverpool for PL title

Wayne Rooney believes Liverpool deserve to be Premier League Champions

Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has two reasons to wish Liverpool ill. Not only is he a legend of our biggest rivals but is also a boyhood Evertonian who has grown used to being overshadowed by the club’s more illustrious neighbours.

Writing in his column on the Times (h/t Liverpool Echo), he managed to put the feelings aside in a show of honesty as he accepted that Liverpool are worthy winners of the Premier League this season. He did appear to humor himself by jokingly adding that it would be good to see the Reds miss out.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are 25 points clear. They are likely to have had the league wrapped up by now had it not been for the shutdown. With the Premier League committed to finishing the season, the Reds look set to end their 30-year-wait for the league once the season restarts.

Amidst the worsening situation due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Premier League currently stands suspended at least until early May. There have been calls from some quarters to declare the season null and void. This will be unfair on a Liverpool team who have rewritten record books on their way to a dominant title run.

Wayne Rooney believes that Liverpool deserve the title

A grave injustice!

Denying the Reds such a deserved title will no doubt appeal to some rival fans. A number of former rivals begrudgingly agree that Klopp’s side deserves to be called champions and now Rooney has officially joined that list.

“Liverpool will win the Premier League”

Currently playing for Derby County, the English legend has admitted to being torn about his sentiments

on the matter. He revealed that a number of Everton fans ring him up telling him that the season has to be cancelled.
A title this season will take us to within one off United’s tally of 20

In spite of his allegiance, Rooney sympathizes with the Reds’ effort and claims it will be unfair if the Merseysiders are denied the title, especially after putting up such a dominant season after a 30-year wait.

“Liverpool have been fantastic. They have put so much work in. They deserve this title”

The ex-Red Devil declared that it is only fair that the current season gets completed, even at the expense of having to delay the next one.

Football without fans is nothing!

Having spent almost two decades at two of our fiercest rivals, Rooney’s sentiments are admirable. They go a long way in showcasing his sportsmanship on the matter. He also went on to voice his disagreement on playing behind closed doors.

Rooney believes that the matches should not be played behind closed doors

According to Rooney, even a closed-doors match will need support staff from the health and law enforcement to be present at the venue. A resource that could be helpful elsewhere considering the current situation.

He also admitted that it is possible that the season could drag on until the end of 2020.

More Liverpool News

Rooney made 491 appearances in the English top-flight for both Everton and United combined. He has scored an impressive 208 goals that places him only behind Alan Shearer in the Premier League all-time scorers list.
