According to a report from Liverpool Echo, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side are poised to make another historic record this season. The Reds, who are currently at the top of the Premier League table, are on their way to becoming the team to spend the highest number of days as league leaders in a season.
The record was previously held by our arch-rivals Manchester United, who were at the top of the Premier League table for 262 days during their triumphant 1993-94 season. The Red Devils’ record was toppled by Chelsea, who spent 274 as league leaders under Jose Mourinho in the 2014-15 campaign. (h/t Liverpool Echo)
And now, Liverpool are in a position to overtake the Blues and make the record their own. Jurgen Klopp’s side have been at the top of the table since matchweek two, making it 220 days as the league leaders. With still nine games left to be played, Liverpool need only two wins to be crowned as champions.
The season was scheduled to conclude on May 17, by which time Liverpool would have equalled Chelsea’s record of 274 days at the top. But the Premier League season has currently been suspended till the end of April due to the coronavirus outbreak.
With the season now likely to stretch until at least June or even beyond, Liverpool are set to knock Chelsea off their perch and become the club to spend the most number of days as league leaders in a season. There is a likelihood that we even breach the 300-day mark along the way. (h/t Liverpool Echo)
