Ole Gunnar Solksjaer reveals he could have joined Liverpool

Norwegian striker Ole Gunnar Solksjaer will always be remembered at Manchester United for his dramatic winner in the Champions League final in 1999.

Had things gone differently, he could have been making a name for himself for another team in Red. Speaking to United’s official site (h/t Daily Star), the baby faced assassin revealed he could have joined Liverpool before moving to Old Trafford in 1996.

The Norwegian’s impressive form at Molde led to him being linked to a number of teams including Liverpool but Solksjaer has admitted that he only had his eyes on a move to United.

An astute signing

A relative unknown outside his homeland, Solksjaer’s move to United went under the radar. He largely put all doubters to rest as he scored six minutes into his debut against Blackburn Rovers.

He would go on to make 327 appearances for the Red Devils and scored 127 goals and 50 assists. His crowning moment came in 1999 when he popped up at the far post to win the European Cup in injury time.

A United legend, he left the club in 2007 before returning as the manager in 2018. He has done reasonably well so far and could be on his second coming as a messiah at Old Trafford.

Liverpool had the spectacular Robbie Fowler and the gifted but unstable Stan Collymore. Micheal Owen too was on the verge of a breakout as Solksjaer moved to Manchester.

It is difficult to predict how he could have done at Anfield but given his quality on and off the pitch, it is likely that he would have been a fan favourite.

It was not just Solksjaer we have missed out on. Teddy Sheringham too was on the verge of a move to Liverpool before the Reds board pulled the plug on the move. It is ironic that the duo went on to play a crucial role in our arch-rivals’ success.
