Liverpool kit war averted as Nike decide to let New Balance go out on a high

Nike will permit Liverpool to finish season in New Balance kit

The suspension of the footballing season due to the coronavirus pandemic has had a ripple effect in a number of allied fields. Liverpool find themselves in one such pickle with their current kit deal with New Balance set to expire in the summer.

With the fate of the season unknown yet, matches could extend beyond the tenure of New Balance. With sportswear giants Nike set to take over for next season, there was the potential for a dispute to break out.

Thankfully, it looks as if such a kerfuffle has been avoided. According to The Athletic, Nike has deemed that “it’s only right” that the Reds complete the 2019-20 season in their current New Balance kit and have informed the club of the same.

“It’s only right that they see out the rest of this season in New Balance. We’re very much focused on next season.”

New Balance will remain Liverpool’s kit suppliers till the end of the season

The lucrative new deal with Nike was set to begin on July 1. This would have led to Liverpool lifting the Premier League trophy in their new kits had the season run that far.

It would be a devastating blow to New Balance, who had earlier lost a protracted legal battle to remain as the club’s kit suppliers. The one solace they had was the immortalization of this season’s kit as the Reds look on course to end a 30-year wait for the league title. It would be extremely unfair to deny them that.

Fair play!

As fans, we can only say it is fair that New Balance gets to go out with a bang. They have provided us with some great kits over the years and have stuck with us through tough times. It is only fitting that we end the association by repaying them for the same.

Liverpool’s current kit draws inspiration from our glory days in the 1980s

We applaud Nike’s ability to ensure that a fair deal has been handed out to their rivals, with another court case the least of anyone’s priorities right now.

More Liverpool News

The current New Balance kit is one of the best kits Liverpool have donned in the Premier League. It has retro elements interspersed with modern innovation in a throwback to our glory days. When the league does, in fact, starts again, Jordan Henderson lifting the Premier league trophy will ensure that those days are well and truly back.
