David Hughes urges Liverpool to replace Lovren with Ben White and save millions

According to a report by Liverpool Echo, David Hughes has urged Liverpool to sign Ben White as a replacement for Dejan Lovren in a move that would see the club potentially saving millions.

Lovren nearly joined Serie A outfit AS Roma last summer for a fee in the region of £15m. And with the summer transfer window approaching again, the report suggests that he could be on his way out for good this time.

The Croatian centre-back, who has featured 14 times for Liverpool this season, has struggled to displace the likes of Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk for a spot in the starting XI.

Dejan Lovren Liverpool Player Ratings

With his chances of regular game time up in the air, it does make sense from the player’s perspective to exit Anfield. However, if that happens, Liverpool would need to sign a replacement pronto. As things stand, we are light in that department and losing Lovren without a back-up option would spell disastrous.

As a result, while speaking on the Analysing Anfield podcast (h/t Liverpool Echo), David Hughes claimed that Ben White would be an excellent – albeit economical – option for us to consider.

The Brighton & Hove Albion youngster has enjoyed an exemplary spell with Leeds United this term – at least until the season got suspended till the end of April to deal with the coronavirus pandemic that has brought the world to a standstill.

Hailing his versatility and passing skills, Hughes further added that a fee in the region of £30m would be ideal to prise the 22-year-old away from Brighton (h/t Liverpool Echo).
