Football pundit Gary Lineker believes that the 2019-20 Premier League season should be finished when it is deemed safe to do so. The Match of the Day presenter further added that only a few supporters that don’t like Liverpool want the campaign to be voided. (h/t Liverpool Echo)
The Premier League, along with all major sporting events across the globe have been called off due to the coronavirus pandemic. As of now, the English top-flight has been suspended till the end of April, but there is no guarantee that footballing action will resume at that point. (h/t Liverpool Echo
)There have been contradicting views on the subject with many believing that the season should be completed, whereas there are a few who opine that the campaign should be declared null and void.
And Lineker has now expressed his opinion on the topic, claiming that the right thing to do would be to resume the campaign when things settle down a bit. Speaking on talkSPORT (h/t Liverpool Echo
), he said:“I think ideally we’d like to finish the season, I think that would make sense. I think that would be the fairest thing.”
Lineker further added that only fans who did not wish for Liverpool to win the title want the season to not be completed.
Should the season resume at some point, Liverpool’s 30-year wait for a league title would most likely come to an end. We are currently leading the Premier League title race with a 25-point lead over second-placed Manchester City. With nine matches left to be played, we are in need of only two more wins to be crowned champions.
There have been reports that the Premier League is planning to resume footballing action in July with the remaining matches likely to be played behind closed doors. (h/t Liverpool Echo)
