Dutch club’s coach reveals Liverpool failed with a bid for Real Madrid starlet last summer

Liverpool tried to sign Real Madrid sensation Martin Odegaard last summer

Liverpool made an attempt to sign Norwegian starlet Martin Odegaard last summer from Real Madrid, but a move failed to materialize. This is according to the midfielder’s former manager at Vitesse Arnhem, Leonid Slutsky (h/t Mirror).

Back in 2014, Odegaard was regarded as a generational talent. Having come through the ranks at Norwegian outfit Stromgodset, the midfielder had already made his debut for the Norwegian national team. Alerted by his potential, Real Madrid swooped in to sign the gifted starlet in January 2015.

But Odegaard’s time at Real Madrid hasn’t been smooth sailing. Having failed to make the grade in the first-team, the 21-year-old has been loaned out on multiple occasions till date.

Odegaard has had stints at Heerenveen and Vitesse Arnhem, where he recovered his lost touch. Currently playing on loan at Real Sociedad, the 21-year-old seems to be getting back to his best. The 21-year-old has been in fine form for the La Liga outfit, scoring 7 goals and assisting 8 more in 28 appearances across all competitions.

Now, his manager at Vitesse, Leonid Slutsky has revealed that the Norwegian could have been playing at Anfield this season instead of Real Sociedad (h/t Mirror).

“His time at Vitesse has been very important. He became one of the best players in the Eredivisie and had many offers in his pocket. Not only from Real Sociedad, but also from Liverpool and Ajax.”

Odegaard’s graph may have gone downwards since making the move to Real Madrid but his time with Vitesse last season and Real Sociedad this time out has shown that he is indeed a precocious talent. At 21, the only way from here is up for the youngster.

As far as the failed move to Liverpool is concerned, he would have been a good addition to the squad. But it is hard to imagine that he would have been a regular first-team member.
