According to the Spanish publication AS (h/t Express), Liverpool could end up signing one of the best players in the world, Kylian Mbappe on a free transfer in the summer of 2022.
This is because of Paris Saint-Germain’s stance of not losing the player until it is absolutely necessary. The 21-year-old wonderkid had been linked with a move to both Real Madrid and Liverpool this summer.
Mbappe’s contract in Paris expires in 2022, and he has not shown any inclination in wanting to extend his stay at the Parc des Princes.
A versatile player who can play anywhere across the frontline, Mbappe has made 120 appearances for the Parisians since joining them in 2017. He has scored an incredible 90 goals and 49 assists as he has formed a formidable triumvirate alongside Edinson Cavani and Neymar.
Madrid looked to be in the front seat to secure the player’s signature, but PSG are adamant in sticking to their guns. The Spanish giants have not been immune to the current financial crisis, prompting them to postpone a move for Mbappe until next season. PSG are reluctant to sell and hope the player will extend his stay at the club.
This could bode well for Liverpool and even out the chances of us landing the player. A player of Mbappe’s quality would not come cheap. Madrid’s insistence on selling him would have led to a bidding war that would have been beyond our capabilities.
By removing that factor out of the equation, the Reds stand a better chance of landing the player. All three of Liverpool’s strikers will be 30 by then, making the infusion of youth a necessity rather than a luxury.
The Frenchman has previously spoken of his admiration for the Reds. Liverpool too can do more than just return the admiration if the transfer fee is not under consideration. Interestingly, Jurgen Klopp had earlier reasoned that Liverpool’s interest in French players never came to fruition due to them being absurdly expensive.
If it does come to pass, the Reds would be signing one of the best players in the world for free – a deal that could become the best piece of business the club has ever done.
Mbappe is the second teenager since the legendary Pele to score in a World Cup final. A two time French Player of the Year, he played a crucial role in France’s triumph in the competition in 2018.
