Liverpool superstar opens up on snubbing transfer to arch rivals

Virgil van Dijk reveals what made him choose Liverpool over Manchester City

Virgil van Dijk is today considered to be the best defender in the world. It was not always the case. Just two years ago, Liverpool were mocked for making the Dutchman the most expensive defender in the world.

Hindsight is a beautiful thing and the amount paid for the defender has been money well spent. Liverpool today has one of the best defenses in Europe with the 28-year-old playing a key role. It could all have been so different had he chosen to move to Manchester City instead.

According to BT Sport (h/t Mirror), Van Dijk has now revealed why he chose to move to Anfield rather than the Etihad.

It wasn’t a straightforward decision with the Dutch colossus taking into account a host of factors. He has credited the playing style employed on Merseyside as well as Liverpool’s passionate fanbase as some of the pivotal factors in his decision (h/t Mirror).

“Before I made the decision to choose Liverpool, I looked at all the aspects of the clubs; the way of playing, the team-mates, the future as well”

Adapting to Klopp’s methods

Van Dijk believes he made the right decision. Given his and the team’s growth since it is hard to argue with his admission. In spite of fitting the team like a glove, he too had to adapt to Jurgen Klopp’s

training methods upon his arrival. (h/t Mirror)

The German is a hard taskmaster and the Dutchman was subject to intense sessions. He eventually grew to enjoy them and is reaping the benefits today (h/t Mirror).

“The manager demands a lot from me and it all helped me become the player I am today. It’s a lot of tactical work, a lot of thinking.”

Van Dijk has been an inspired signing who has fit in perfectly at Liverpool. His role in transforming a porous defense into one of the best in the business today cannot be overstated.

With the Reds closing in on the Premier League title, life at Anfield is only going to get better for the Dutchman.
