According to French publication L’Equipe (h/t Express), Ligue 1 giants Olympique Lyon have put star midfielder Houssem Aouar for sale. Liverpool have been keeping tabs on the 21-year-old valued at £440m.
Les Gones finished seventh as the season came to a premature end in France recently. With the COVID-19 pandemic set to affect club finances, Lyon are in a state of bother with no European football to look forward to.
With cash at a premium, they could be forced to sell two of their best assets-including Aouar. (h/t Express
)The 21-year-old attacking midfielder caught the eye of Reds scouts while watching former Lyon star Nabil Fekir
. The versatile midfielder is capable of playing both an attacking and defensive position in midfield while also being able to do a job on the left flank.Having made his debut as a teenager in 2017, Aouar has gone on to make 133 appearances for the club. A player with excellent technique and composure, he has scored 24 goals and contributed 24 assists so far.
Capable of playing as an attacking midfielder, the youngster’s vision and ability on the ball are reminiscent of Philippe Coutinho. Although the Reds have a world-class front three, the lack of creativity from midfield has proven to be a bridge too far at times.
The absence of a creative midfielder who can unlock defences will elevate an already excellent Liverpool team on the verge of Premier League dominance.
Although competition in the Reds midfield is high, the Frenchman will add something new to the mix with his creativity and invention.
The coronavirus pandemic has affected the revenue of football clubs, including Liverpool. It has been reported that the Reds could be in for a quiet window given the financial fallout.
The Reds were close to signing Nabil Fekir in the summer of 2018, only for the deal to collapse. They will do well to get one for Aouar over the line.
