Aston Villa eyeing swoop for Divock Origi

According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Aston Villa are lining up a raid on Premier League champions Liverpool for striker Divock Origi in the ongoing transfer window.

The 25-year-old Origi joined Liverpool in 2014 from LOSC Lille and spent a year on loan at the French club before joining up with the Reds.

After having failed to make an impact at Anfield, he was sent out on loan to VfL Wolfsburg for the 2017/18 campaign. While it was hardly a success, Jurgen Klopp managed to integrate Origi into the side and the Belgian delivered.

Crunch goals against Everton and Newcastle United in the Premier League, coupled with the double against Barcelona in the UCL semi-finals and one more strike against Spurs in the finals meant he etched his name into the Liverpool folklore.

However, the season gone by wasn’t as roaring a success for Origi. He managed to start just seven Premier League matches even as we went on to win the title. In 42 appearances in all competitions, he came up with a return of six goals and four assists

Given that his situation with respect to regular game time is unlikely to improve in the coming campaign, clubs seem to be lining up to sign him up this summer. There had been reported interest from Serie A giants Lazio. And now, Aston Villa, too, are keen on signing the Belgian international. (h/t Mirror)

The report states that Origi, too, would be open to leaving Anfield in the summer. This is because he wants to play regularly and stand a chance to make it to the Belgium squad for the European Championships next year.

Origi signed a new long-term contract with the club just a year ago. However, with the player keen on leaving, and no shortage of suitors, we may see him leave Anfield this summer.
