As reported by Metro, Liverpool midfield star Georginio Wijnaldum has addressed speculations linking him with a summer move to Barcelona, claiming that it is just a rumour and nothing else.
The 29-year-old has been intensely linked with a summer transfer to Barcelona, with the Catalans’ new manager Ronald Koeman keen on working with his compatriot. (h/t Express)
It was even claimed that Wijnaldum had already agreed a three-year contract with the La Liga giants. (h/t Express)
Currently on international duty with the Netherlands, Wijnaldum was quizzed about the rumours of a switch to Barcelona. To which the Dutchman responded coyly, claiming that he had nothing to say about it at the moment. (h/t Metro)
“It’s a rumour, I have nothing to say about it.”
Wijnaldum has been with Liverpool since 2016, having signed from Newcastle United. The midfielder has grown into an integral member of the team under Jurgen Klopp, playing a pivotal part in our Champions League and Premier League triumphs.
However, the fact that his contract runs out in less than a year has stirred up all sorts of speculation now.
Given his standing within the team, losing him might come as a blow. At the same time, if contract negotiations fail to come to fruition, we should rather cash in this summer than losing him for nothing next year.
As of now Wijnaldum is clearly keeping his cards close to his chest. And, it remains to be seen how this transfer story develops in the coming weeks.
