Liverpool’s stance on 28-year-old star who struggled for game time last season revealed

Liverpool considering the sale of Xherdan Shaqiri

Premier League champions Liverpool are said to be plotting the potential sale of Swiss international midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri this summer. According to the Echo (h/t Daily Star) the Reds are considering whether or not he should be cashed in on, after the attacker had a largely underwhelming season last time around.

Although the Reds are reportedly open to offers for the trickster, none of the clubs who were interested in his services during the January window have reached out. With no official bids in place yet, the Reds are said to be looking at the situation and scheming up potential solutions.

The 28-year-old first joined us from Stoke City back in the summer of 2018. For all the stick that he has received since then, it must be conceded that the Swiss international was good in his first season at the club

Xherdan Shaqiri played sparingly this past season

Having arrived for a relatively nominal fee, not too much was expected from Shaqiri right off the bat. Probably brought in by Klopp as a utility player who could be deployed across a variety of positions, Shaqiri’s first season at the club was a motivating one to say the least.

Not only did he feature in 30 appearances for us across all competitions, but he also scored six times

over the course of the campaign, with two of them coming in the all-important game against Manchester United.

While it must be conceded that Shaqiri still has a future, the fact that he played just 11 times for the Reds last season should be considered a sign. The Swiss attacker had to deal with a variety of injuries and fitness issues over the last year, and this limited his involvement in the team quite drastically.

With highly-rated young players like Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliot coming to the fore at Liverpool, the amount of game-time he receives is effectively guaranteed to decrease even further in the upcoming campaign.

There’s no need to even begin doubting the quality that Shaqiri brings to the table. But considering the level at which Liverpool are aspiring, he might not be the right man for the job.

Still only 28, it might be in the former Stoke City man’s best interest to find a move away from Anfield this summer, so as to relaunch his career elsewhere in the continent.
