Liverpool star makes U-turn regarding transfer after positive discussions with Klopp

Georginio Wijnaldum wants to stay at Liverpool after positive talks with Klopp

The future of Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has been one of the biggest question marks having over this Liverpool side.

The former Newcastle United man had an important part to play in the team last season, and this has been recognised by newly-appointed Barcelona managed Ronald Koeman as well. The Camp Nou boss’ desire to acquire the midfielder has been well documented over recent weeks, and has been clarified further by Sky Sports

as well.

Also in the report though, is one piece of information that could come as positive news to the Anfield faithful. It is claimed that Wijnaldum recently held contract talks with Jurgen Klopp to discuss his place at the club. And the midfielder is said to have come out of it with a positive outlook on the situation. (h/t Sky Sports

Wijnaldum and Klopp have held positive talks

It is suggested that the Dutchman’s mind has been changed regarding his wish to move away, and that he’s looking forward to receiving an extension offer at Liverpool. (h/t Sky Sports)

The former Newcastle man has just one year left on his current deal with the Anfield club. If the club is unable to come to a definite decision on his future in the coming weeks, then Klopp would have to face the possibility of Wijnaldum walking away for nothing at the end of the season. The talks conducted between the parties on Wednesday are said to have gone well though, with the midfielder even conceding that he wants to stay on at Liverpool. (h/t Sky Sports

Ronald Koeman’s desire to sign Wijnaldum is completely understandable, as the duo have worked together during their time together with the Dutch national setup. Despite being 29 years old, the Liverpool ace is widely regarded to be one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the European game at the moment.

The lack of energetic options in the core of this Barcelona side could become an issue, and the summer sale of Arthur has done very little to help the new manager’s cause.

With Liverpool seemingly pushing for back-to-back league titles, albeit without any signings, keeping Wijnaldum at the club will be a necessity. Having won the Premier League and Champions League with him in the team over the last two seasons, Klopp’s wish to keep him at Anfield isn’t overly surprising either.

With Kostas Tsimikas still the only signing we’ve made, Liverpool fans will be eager to see some now additions. But if the cost of that is Wijnaldum’s departure, it would be in the team’s best interest to stay put and keep the Dutchman.
