Liverpool are eyeing up a move for Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij in January

A report by FC Inter (h/t Daily Star) has linked Liverpool with a move for Inter Milan centre-back Stefan de Vrij in January.

Liverpool are in the midst of an injury crisis, especially in defence. First choice centre-backs Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk are long-term absentees with serious injuries.

On top of that, Joel Matip came off at half-time in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Fulham this weekend due to a back problem.

Fabinho, who is already a makeshift defender, was paired with Jordan Henderson in Liverpool’s defence. With games coming thick and fast, it seems that the injury crisis may push the club to strengthen in January.

One option that Liverpool are considering is Inter Milan’s Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij. As per FC Inter (h/t Daily Star), Liverpool have contacted Mino Raiola, De Vrij’s agent, over a possible move.

Virgil van Dijk would be familiar with the 28-year-old as they have both played together in the Dutch national team. De Vrij has even praised the Liverpool centre-half in the past.

“He is a strong defender. I can learn from him… It is always nice to play alongside him.”

One issue that Liverpool may face in the deal is that De Vrij is on the verge of signing a new contract at Inter Milan. This might have an effect on the terms that Inter would be willing to agree upon for him.
